How to Walk on Water

For many years I have taken the bible story of Jesus walking on water in Matthew 14:22-33 for its literal meaning. Yes, I knew that it was a perfect example of faith; we can do anything once we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. However, as a young Christian I thought that “walking on water” really meant – walking on water. How can anyone have so much faith that they can actually walk on water? How can one’s faith be so big to move mountains? How can one’s faith destroy giants? How can one’s faith overcome the deadly poison of a serpent?
As I matured in Christianity, I realized that I was living a pipe dream. Water, mountains, Goliaths and serpents, just to name a few, seemed to be unbeatable adversaries. What weapons am I supposed to use to destroy these figure heads? How can I tell a mountain to move and it moves? For a while I went through life thinking that I must possess so much faith to overcome these literal images of mountains, raging seas, goliaths and serpents. Maybe these images were placed in my subconscious by avid storytellers of Bible stories in my childhood. As a child, I did not understand the real concept of faith and the effect faith could have on any situation or circumstance. When I was a child, I thought like a child. As I have matured in Christianity the mountains, raging water, goliaths and serpents morphed into real life situations and actual people. I realized that faith did not deal with the actual removal of these entities, but faith is a weapon that can be used to remove difficult people from your life and change intolerable situations.
When Jesus instructed us to speak to our mountain, "For truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be removed and be thrown into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, he will have whatever he says" (Mark 11:23): this meant that whatever difficult situation you are experiencing, once you speak positive change into your life and call upon the name of Jesus:
A difficult supervisor can be removed
An abusive partner can be removed
Poverty can be removed
Sickness can be removed
Unemployment would be no more
In Matthew 14:27-29, Jesus spoke to the disciples and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” When Jesus told Peter to come and walk on the water, this meant that we are to forsake all the worries and troubles that are behind us and walk in faith. When we walk on water:
Promotion happens
Financial blessings overflows
Healing occurs
Problems are solved
In the Book of 1 Samuel 17:45, when David faced Goliath, he told the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” David shows us that it doesn’t matter the size of the problem, the God we serve will deliver us. There is victory in Jesus. When we trust in God:
Debts would dissolve
Anger will quell
Attitudes changed
Strength is regained
In Genesis 3:14 the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life…” There are many people who would come into our lives like wolves in sheep’s clothing. Their aim is to control and destroy one’s confidence and self-worth; but when we ask the Lord to reveal the serpent that is among us:
Demons would flee
Enemies would be destroyed
Relationships restored
Curses will be lifted
I have given you four examples of bible verses that describe the level of faith we as Christians should have on a daily basis. However, all these verses have one thing in common – there is one word that describes what must be done in order to fight against the onslaughts of the enemy.
That word is…..SPEAK.
When we speak to the mountain and tell it to move….it will move.
When we listen to God’s voice and trust His word…we will overcome our fears.
When we stand firm in God’s Word in the presence of our enemies…. no situation is too difficult for us to handle.
When we declare to our enemies that they have no power over us…. our enemies will be destroyed.
Stay on course, stay focus, stay on track and continue to serve in accordance to God’s will. He will bless you. When you feel you might be sinking or that mountain seem like it is not going anywhere, your persistence in the word of God would be no match for your adversaries.
Walking on water takes strength especially when we do not know the outcome. But God would not take us to a place where he cannot deliver us. Listening to His voice and reading His word is our compass to the direction we need to go. Trusting in His direction will lead us to a place of unending abundance.
We can walk on water, when we able to speak in faith. There must be no doubt in your mind that God has already answered your prayer. There must be no doubt in your mind that the promises of God will enfold.
